wwwThe Internet has grown tremendously since its early days. While the Internet has been around long before the 1990s, 1995 essentially marked the dawn of the World Wide Web as we know it today. The number of websites online has grown from 23,500 in 1995 to 612,843,429 in 2012. There is no question about the explosive growth the Internet has experienced in just a short period of time. To put it into perspective, Facebook is 15 times larger than the Internet was back in 1995.

Along with the growth of websites, the number of users accessing the Internet has also increased dramatically. In 1995, Internet users numbered less than 40 million. In 2000, there were 361 million worldwide users and today, there are nearly 2 billion Internet users worldwide. Since 1995, technology has advanced and become more available to more people. Internet access is more widespread and the devices are more affordable and portable than they were in 1995. The advent of WiFi and mobile devices is bringing the Internet into the hands of even more users in more places.

As a business owner, its important to look back on the growth of the Internet and technology. Was your business one of the first to emerge online or were you reluctant to embrace the Internet phenomenon and resisted getting website for a long time? There is a lesson to be learned for everyone when looking at the growth of the Internet in terms of both websites and users. As mobile technology continues to grow and emerge, it is important to consider whether you are adapting appropriately.

Considering that there were 612,843,429 websites on the Internet in 2012, how can your website stand out? Even though the Internet is so large, standing out isn’t as difficult as it may seem. If you are able to find your niche and provide quality content, your website will rise to the top.

Working with your website designer will position your website for success in an overcrowded marketplace. After all, even though there are more websites today, more people are using the Internet. Everyone doesn’t share the same interests and if you are optimizing your content for the search engines, people who are interested in your niche will find you. Over time you’ll be able to build a loyal following. You don’t need to be the biggest or the best in order to find your place in the vast sea of websites on the Internet.   You simply need to provide a unique and valuable website.
