Google Penguin 3.0 – More Changes to How Google Treats Links

Posted on in Uncategorized

537907_94341228Penguin was launched by Google with the goal of eliminating spam on the Internet. Since 2012, there have been 5 updates. On October 19, Google confirmed to Search Engine Land that it had in fact launched a new update – Penguin 3.0. By all accounts, this update appears to be a data refresh and an algorithm update.

According to Google, Penguin 3.0 will be rolling out over the next few weeks. As a result, it will be a while before we truly know the impact of the update. However, it is estimated to impact approximately 1 percent of queries.

Penguin 3.0 is a continued effort on Google’s part to remove spam from the web. Website owners who have been impacted by Penguin were highly anticipating this update so they could evaluate their efforts to improve with a data refresh.

After nearly a year, the anticipation for this update was said to be among the largest in Google’s history among website owners who were impacted by previous roll outs of Penguin. However, considering that the update is believed to have come with both a data refresh and an algorithm update, the update may yield mixed results for website owners.

On a positive note, it looks like website owners who are impacted by Penguin are no longer going to have to endure long wait times for updates. Google has stated that Penguin 3.0 provides for more frequent data refreshes. This is good news for website owners who do find themselves negatively impacted by Penguin and work hard to make improvements. It’s still too early to tell how frequently the data refreshes will actually be applied.

Of great concern is how this new update is going to impact they way Google treats links. If you have links that the algorithm determines to be spam, you’re in trouble. Penguin 3.0 may result in ranking fluctuations if you are still working to address your backlinks. It’s too early to tell right now what the implications of Penguin 3.0 will be for website owners. By most accounts right now, it’s looking like mild algorithm update and data refresh.

Do you think you’ve been impacted by Penguin 3.0?
