Finding Your Perfect Niche

Posted on in Marketing

As a business owner it is important to find your perfect niche. Finding your unique niche isn’t always easy. Many businesses serve in highly competitive industries where it seems as though every niche is already taken. However, if you take some time to research your industry, you will likely find a niche that isn’t being served effectively.

 Look Closely At your Industry

In order to find your niche, you need to take a close look at your industry. Consider what needs aren’t being met by the current industry leaders. If you are able to identify needs that aren’t being met, then you’ve found your niche. Over time, you can carve out a profitable niche for your business by serving the needs not met by your competitors.

Finding a niche isn’t always easy. Sometimes you need to create one for yourself through marketing and a unique product or service you offer. Chances are good that not every demographic in the industry you are in is being effectively served. You need to identify these demographics that are either not being served at all or are being under-served. In many cases, you can find your perfect niche within these demographics.

For example, perhaps you are an outfitter serving the outdoor climbing industry. While your competitors may serve the main segment of climbers, you identify a whole community of boulder climbers who aren’t being effectively served by your industry. Instead of taking on the entire line of climbing products, you can hone in on a niche and serve the boulder climbers. These climbers have unique gear needs and you can develop your niche around them.

While this is just one example, gaining an in-depth knowledge of your industry will help you identify a niche that you can serve. There are many ways to learn about the different groups within your industry. Today, marketers are turning more and more to social media to identify customer needs that aren’t being served by their respective industries. If you’re looking to find a niche, spend some time on social media interacting with customers within the industry you serve. You never know, you might find a lot of ideas for unique niches to serve. One niche idea might even be the perfect fit for your company.
